ON THE GROUND – STRAW

On the ground is a proposal to make “corrillo” or a circle: a context to weave together and enter the repetitive and contemplative timing of craftsmanship. It is an opportunity to delve deeper into the weaving of local soft fibres.

Straw from different wheat varieties has been braided in various ways throughout history. On this occasion, we will learn how to make straw rope and spiral weave using the looping or “punto de nudo” technique, used since the Neolithic period and across multiple cultures, and which can be done with different soft fibres.

We will see different material preparation processes for making cordage and looping. We will be able to make a small “egg basket” or other types of volumes.

We will use rye straw grown in the small field in front of the Serinyà garden studio. Rye straw, with its specially long, strong and golden fibres, is one of the most suitable and widely used straws for basketry.

Workshop aimed at creators, artisans, artists, or anyone interested in plant fibre weaving, crafts, and artistic creation. For adults or children, 9 years and older, accompanied by an adult. Ask any questions.
