The aim of the course is to explore geometric patterns through the weaving of plant fibres. Traditional basket weaving from different places around the world reveal the patterns of the universe in its shapes and geometries.
We will learn the technique of hexagonal weaving, and we will see the transformation from plate to volume in the transition from hexagon to pentagon. We will weave an icosahedron with chestnut fibre, one of the five main platonic solids. We will approach the other platonic solids with the himmeli technique, a popular craft from Finland with ritual intention that is made with rye straw.
